Out of Tbilisi early, the reservoir turning green below Ananuri, the pass at Gudauri, and a 4x4 relay for the last steep kilometres to the church.
Juta, Truso and the tracks past Gergeti
Same highway, further on. The Truso valley’s mineral springs and the Juta trailhead are gravel from the turn-off, which is why these run in proper vehicles.
Gudauri when the snow settles in
Between December and April the pass stops being scenery and becomes the point: wide open bowls above the treeline, an hour and a half from the capital.

Tbilisi is where every Georgian itinerary starts.
Sulphur bathhouses under brick domes, balconies hanging off the Sololaki lanes, a cable car up to Narikala and a table that does not end. Almost every day trip in the country also leaves from here.

Most of the country can be arranged from your guesthouse the night before. These cannot: they run on mountain roads that close, snow that has to arrive, and a border you have to carry a passport through.

Rain off the Black Sea, snow on the passes: go underground.
Western Georgia is genuinely wet, and from November the mountain roads start closing. The good answers are all indoors: a lit cave system near Kutaisi, a qvevri cellar in Kakheti, a kitchen with a rolling pin and a bowl of khinkali dough, an abandoned sanatorium with the roof still on.
Three things you cannot book anywhere but Georgia.
Monasteries and mountain views exist all over the Caucasus. Clay-buried wine, a mining town strung with cable cars, and stone towers built against blood feuds belong to this country alone.
Wine Buried in the Floor
Georgian wine ferments in qvevri: egg-shaped clay vessels sunk to the neck in a cellar floor, sealed with a stone lid and left through winter. UNESCO put the method on its heritage list in 2013, and the amber whites it produces taste like nothing coming out of a steel tank. Cellars in Kakheti open the lids for visitors from spring through the autumn harvest.

The Chiatura Ropeways
Chiatura is a mining town wedged into a gorge, and since 1954 the way to work has been by cable car strung from cliff to cliff. Several of the old cabins have been replaced, a few of the abandoned ones still hang there, and the whole valley reads as an engineering drawing at full scale. Tskaltubo’s empty spa palaces are an hour down the road.

The Svan Tower Houses
In Mestia and Ushguli, families spent centuries building stone defensive towers onto their houses — refuges from avalanches and from each other.
